Tanzania Safari & Kilimanjaro Tipping Guidelines
Fair compensation advice, customary gratuities, and etiquette for driver-guides, mountain porters, and camp staff.
Overview & Expert Insight
Tipping in Tanzania is an established and customary way to show appreciation for the hard work, extensive wilderness knowledge, and hospitality of your safari driver-guides, mountain porters, chefs, and lodge staff.
While all Smashing Africa Tours crew members receive fair, industry-leading base salaries and formal employment contracts, tips represent a meaningful bonus that directly impacts their families and local communities in Arusha and Moshi.

How to Distribute Tips on Safari
On a private safari, you spend your entire journey with your dedicated driver-guide. They track lions, navigate river crossings, spot camouflaged leopards, and ensure your safety throughout the day.
Tipping is customarily given on the final afternoon or morning of your safari in an envelope, accompanied by a handshake and word of thanks (Asante sana).
For safari lodges and permanent tented camps, most properties have a central "Staff Tipping Box" located near reception or the lounge. Putting $10 to $20 USD per day into this box ensures equal distribution among all behind-the-scenes staff including chefs, housekeepers, security guards, and gardeners.
- •Bring crisp, clean US Dollar bills printed in 2013 or newer, as local banks in Tanzania do not accept older or torn banknotes.
- •Tipping can also be handed over in local Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) if you prefer.
Kilimanjaro Mountain Crew Tipping Ceremony
Climbing Kilimanjaro requires an entire support crew. For a private party of 2 climbers, you will typically have 1 lead guide, 1 assistant guide, 1 cook, and 5 to 6 porters who carry camping gear, safety equipment, food, and water up the mountain.
On the last evening of the climb at the final camp (Mweka Camp or Horombo Hut), the crew gathers for a heartfelt celebration with singing (the traditional Jambo Bwana song). You will be given a tipping sheet by the lead guide to distribute envelopes directly to each porter and team member.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are tips per person in our travel group or total from everyone?
Safari guide tips are calculated PER VEHICLE / PER GROUP, not per individual traveler. For example, if a family of four tips $25/day, each person contributes roughly $6.25/day.
Can I tip with a credit card at lodges?
Most luxury lodges can add gratuities to your credit card at checkout, but tipping your safari driver-guide and mountain porters directly in cash (USD or TZS) is strongly preferred so they receive their funds immediately without processing delays.
